Nina Phillips

Teacher

I became an educator because education transformed my life. I was adopted and, as a child, I struggled to read. I had to work harder than most to catch up, to build confidence, and to grow into someone who believed in their own intelligence. Those trials shaped me—and now, I teach to be that source of encouragement and possibility for my students. I want them to know that no obstacle defines them, and that with persistence, support, and courage, they can rise and thrive.

Prior to Equitas, I spent 20 years teaching high school English—12 years in Chicago Public Schools and 8 years at another charter school in California. During that time, I focused on helping students grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers while also developing creative projects like podcasts, plays, and digital storytelling. Those experiences shaped me into an educator who values rigor, student voice, and equity in every classroom.

I chose Equitas because its mission resonates deeply with my own journey and values. Equitas is committed to preparing students not only for college and careers, but for life—and I know firsthand how transformative education can be. As someone who had to overcome early struggles with reading and confidence, I believe in creating a classroom where students feel seen, supported, and challenged to meet high expectations. Equitas’ focus on equity and excellence aligns with my passion for ensuring that every student, no matter their background or challenges, has the opportunity to thrive.

Outside of school, I enjoy I am a writer and storyteller who loves to create and share narratives that inspire others. I also value wellness and balance—whether it’s working out, spending time with my two cats, or enjoying the sunshine. Writing, fitness, and creativity fuel me personally, and they also enrich what I bring back to the classroom.
