Sofia comes to Equitas with over 26 years of leadership experience in K - 12 public education in California.  As a child of immigrants, Sofia’s parents instilled the values of advocacy for oneself and others, hard work and dreaming boldly. These values and her experiences as a Latina growing up in Los Angeles propelled her towards a lifelong commitment of leading for equity. 

Most recently, Sofia was serving as the Chief of Staff at San Diego Unified School District, serving close to  100,000 scholars. She has held an array of positions throughout her career, starting with her time as a teacher in South Central Los Angeles. Sofia holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Cal State Fullerton and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California. 

 

Upon accepting the offer from the Equitas Academy Board of Directors, Sofia shared, “I am excited to lead Equitas as the next CEO in collaboration with an amazing network of scholars, families, leaders, educators and staff.  It is evident that Equitas is a unique place to learn and grow, grounded in an indelible commitment to the Pico Union Community.” 

Sofia begins her work with Equitas this July and will be leading a committed group of educators towards the next phase of growth for the organization, focusing on equity, being people centered, and continuing to foster scholar academic and socioemotional growth.
