We welcome and introduce the Equitas Academy Managing Director of Academics, Dr. Catherine Belcher.
Dr. Belcher was born and raised in the border community of Calexico, California, where her parents, as well as many members of her family, served as lifelong educators.
Catherine comes to Equitas with a wealth of knowledge and experience in roles including being a former middle and high school English and Social Studies teacher, as well as Dance, in both California and Pennsylvania. Dr. Belcher has served as a school administrator in Los Angeles for ten years including as Head of Secondary School for Larchmont Charter School, Principal of Synergy Quantum Academy, and previous to these as the Director of Teaching and Learning at West Adams Preparatory High School. Additionally, she has served as the Director of Learning and Engagement at Imagination.org, where she supported educators engaged in makerspace and design thinking projects with students. Along with her traditional work in education, Catherine has co-authored a book titled Teaching Harry Potter, the Power of Imagination in Multicultural Classrooms (2011), exploring the work of three diverse teachers and the use of new media and popular culture in schools. Throughout her journey as leader and educator, Dr. Belcher has led in curriculum development and taught at Loyola Marymount University's School of Education as well as Bard College. Catherine earned her PhD in Educational Leadership from the School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania and her Master’s in Teacher Education, as well as her Bachelor’s Degree in History, at Stanford University.
When not working, she enjoys spending time with her daughter and family, and loves to teach and experience dance, see great (and often geeky) movies, and read whenever she can.
