2018-19 Alumni Program Update

Dear Equitas Academy family,

Summer is now here and we are one year closer to that college degree for 165 current Equitas alumni!

This academic year was an eventful one for our alumni efforts. Yes, our brand new logo is quite spiffy (above), but what excites us the most is how our alumni have become increasingly connected to their Equitas family and the larger Pico-Union community. We know that providing scholarship opportunities, offering a college and career resource library, and scheduling college visits are keys to success. At Equitas Academy, we pair those resources with a deep connection to community and transformational change.

A few highlights from 2018-2019

  • Alumni Service Day. Our alumni got together over Cesar Chavez weekend to provide Pico-Union residents groceries, beautify a community garden, tutor elementary school students, and organize a community library. Their former 8th grade teacher, Addie Davis, was our keynote speaker!
  • Experiencing Equitas and Family Workshops. Throughout the year, alumni have returned to share their experience and give back at Equitas. This January they sat on a panel to provide our Board, and other stakeholders, with a unique view of the Equitas experience. They were especially thrilled to visit and tour EQ3 for the first time (below).

  • Home for the Holidays Family Dinner. We welcomed back our alumni and their families to EQ2's MPR during their winter break for games, socializing, and a tamale dinner. Nominated by their respective high schools for their leadership contributions in and out of school, alumni Dillan W. (Class of 2025) and Meylin T. (Class of 2026) were also honored with our first annual Commitment to Community Alumni Awards.

  • High School Signing Day. Just a few weeks ago, our 8th grade scholars and EQ2 staff celebrated a key moment in their college pathway: selecting high quality high schools that will prepare them for success! We also introduced them to our alumni program. A few fun facts: 100 percent of 8th grade scholars who applied to parochial private schools were accepted! And for the first time, an Equitas scholar was accepted to a secular private school.
In Pico-Union, only about 7% of residents over 25 have earned a bachelor's degree. Together, we are all helping change that.

A few ways to support our alumni efforts
